Frequently Asked Questions

What is iBillionaire?

iBillionaire taps into the investment strategies of Wall Street billionaires and provides key insights into the financial data and investment decisions of leading U.S. hedge fund managers and institutional investors. It provides access to billionaire investment portfolios, strategies and stock picks, in turn building valuable tools for investing.

How did iBillionaire get started, and where is it going?

Launched in April 2013, iBillionaire originated as a mobile application that tracks the investment strategies of the world’s top billionaires. Less than a year later, iBillionaire harnessed this information and introduced the iBillionaire Index (IBLN), which curates the 30 U.S. equities in which a select pool of billionaires have allocated the most funds. The index has been licensed to Direxion Investments for the creation of the Direxion iBillionaire Index ETF. iBillionaire has also created the iBillionaire High Dividend Index (IBD). iBillionaire is a pioneer in mobile finance, transforming the way investors analyze data and providing a global, mobile distribution platform for strategic investment products.

How are billionaires selected?

iBillionaire tracks leading billionaire investors who have created their fortunes in the financial markets. Time and numbers have shown us that they are the best investors in the world. Our criteria of selection is based on net worth, source of wealth, turnover, and the efficacy of replicating their publicly-disclosed positions.

Where does the information on iBillionaire come from?

iBillionaire gets all of its information from public records filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) – namely, forms and schedules 13F, 13D and 4.

Each quarter, iBillionaire analyzes hundreds of billions of dollars in assets held and managed by a pool of over 20 billionaires. It processes thousands of investments, most of which are in equities, going back a decade.

The iBillionaire Index, specifically, is based on 13F filings. Section 13(f) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 was passed in order to increase public availability of information regarding the security holdings of institutional investors. It requires certain institutional investment managers to report their holdings of certain securities to the SEC on Form 13F.

Is the information timely?

Institutional investment managers with over $100 million in assets under management are required to submit a form 13F to the SEC within 45 days at the end of each calendar quarter. iBillionaire utilizes these documents to create billionaire portfolios and devise the iBillionaire Index. While there is a time lag, it is important to note that iBillionaire largely follows long-term investors.

iBillionaire also alerts users of “recent transactions” – changes in positions that billionaires are required to file in a more immediate manner. A Form 4 filing, required of corporate insiders, is required within two days of a change in ownership. And a Schedule 13D – a beneficial ownership report – is required within 10 days.

What is a hedge fund?

A hedge fund is a limited partnership of investors. It is an alternative investment vehicle that is largely available to only sophisticated investors, such as institutions and individuals with significant assets.
